Product Overview

Trapdoor Pond Snails (Viviparus malleatus)

Trapdoor Snails are the preferred snail species for pond owners. Trapdoor Snails will survive in northern climates, will not eat live healthy plant tissue, and will not climb out of the water. Pond snails are helpful in keeping algae under control in your pond as they groom your plant containers, rocks, liner sides and plants. Trapdoor snails will consume excess fish food, fish waste and decaying leaves from the bottom of the pond, and therefore help to detoxify waste products. Trapdoor Snails are live-bearing (viviparous) -- they don't have as many offspring as most snails, and do not bear young as often, so are unlikely to overpopulate the pond, as is common with egg-laying snails. To have a positive effect on algae growth, a minimum of 10 snails per 50 square feet of pond surface is necessary. Large natural ponds would require at least 200 snails per acre to be effective. It also is important to have pond plants filter the pond and providing some shade, and to not overfeed fish, as the pond's ecosystem needs to be fairly balanced for the snails to make a significant difference.

    Trapdoors...

Posted by Wigglelegfrog on Jun 12th 2019

I have a little way of knowing how well these snails will actually do toward cleaning off all my algae; however, I CAN say that since I introduced them to my pond a week ago, they have been all over it, eating algae like crazy. I do not yet see a difference, but I have a lot of algae. I ordered 25 snails from LilyBlooms, and like others have stated in their reviews, I received extras; in my case three extra. Within a few hours, all but a couple of them had moved considerable distance from where I originally placed them in the shallower water on the smooth river rocks, slightly submerged, and in the afternoon shade.. It took a couple of days before I could confirm the other two were alive. Three of the snails I received were smaller, about an inch or less in diameter (possibly the ones that were thrown in as extras.) Twenty five were large, 1 1/4” - 2” in size. Shipping was surprisingly fast, as I received my order within three days. So, now, all twenty five are making their way around my 500 gallon pond. Snail watching is fun, and I am looking forward to a pond with much less algae!

These amazing snails have cleaned up the water in my pond in less than a week. I am very grateful to them and would willingly give them a tip but all they want is algae.

I recieved 12 and 6 had a lot of moss on them. Doesn't seem to matter. All 13 from last year died out. All the 100 babies I took out of the upper pond, I put them in a basement 55 gal aquarium. They lasted 2 months then died. 72 degree water temp and 10 pond gold fish. All fish are doing great. Don't know why snails died.

I love things that eat, my snails eat all the time, keeping the sides of my tub pond clean, & are very easy to please when it comes to food, no trouble at all. Thanks LilyBlooms for having these wonderful creatures.

I ordered 150 snails. I'm very happy with these little guys. They shipped very quickly and arrived wonderfully packed and very much alive. They were all moving around within half an hour and are now well dispersed around the pond, doing their thing. I'd certainly order from these guys again.
