Product Overview

Trapdoor Pond Snails (Viviparus malleatus)

Trapdoor Snails are the preferred snail species for pond owners. Trapdoor Snails will survive in northern climates, will not eat live healthy plant tissue, and will not climb out of the water. Pond snails are helpful in keeping algae under control in your pond as they groom your plant containers, rocks, liner sides and plants. Trapdoor snails will consume excess fish food, fish waste and decaying leaves from the bottom of the pond, and therefore help to detoxify waste products. Trapdoor Snails are live-bearing (viviparous) -- they don't have as many offspring as most snails, and do not bear young as often, so are unlikely to overpopulate the pond, as is common with egg-laying snails. To have a positive effect on algae growth, a minimum of 10 snails per 50 square feet of pond surface is necessary. Large natural ponds would require at least 200 snails per acre to be effective. It also is important to have pond plants filter the pond and providing some shade, and to not overfeed fish, as the pond's ecosystem needs to be fairly balanced for the snails to make a significant difference.

    Snail mystery

Posted by Josie on Jun 21st 2021

My 20 snails arrived in apparently good shape (no I didn't get an extra in case one dies, as some people mentioned). As instructed, I put them in the shallows of my 8' x 11' goldfish pond and waited to see what they would do. The next morning they had all disappeared. A day later one was floating on the surface, dead. But the others apparently survived. So there should be 19 left. I say "should be" because I have only seen any sign of two of them since. My pond water is relatively clear; I can see the bottom, which is rock- and pebble-covered, with some algae on it. I'm assuming the snails are there, but are camouflaged. However, there ARE also 3-4 bullfrogs (definitely unwanted) in the pond which come over from the nearby marsh pond, and which elude being caught. I've wondered whether the one large frog ate some of the snails (they do eat birds, after all; and they'll eat fish when really hungry). This is a mystery. Assuming the snails ARE still there, I also assume they are doing fine.

Once order these arrived relatively quick from ship date. I ordered 40 and received 46 all done well except 1. They were a fantastic price and great size. I kept them in a bowl of water for 2 days prior to going to our property then put the bowl of water in the pond to let them acclimate and they done superbly. Of course cant see them but no floating shells so everything seems fine. Highly recommend these

It's been almost a week, and we haven't seen them yet. They're undoubtedly adjusting to the pond and the fish and snails.

    Happy as a Snail!

Posted by Elizabeth Gravuer on Jun 4th 2021

I was very concerned when I place my order for the Pond Snails, because I am located in Central Florida and the temperature is getting hot. However, I was not disappointed. The order shipped 6/1 and I received it 6/3/21 at 4:15 PM. They were nicely packaged in newspaper and double bagged. I immediately acclimated then in my pond as instructed. One shell was empty and one floated and did not make it. But all the others (including extras) made it and had scurried away by next morning. I am very HAPPY with my purchase. THANK YOU!!

    Trapdoor Snail SNAFU

Posted by PATRICIA on Jun 3rd 2021

Got off to a rough start with my delivery of 10 Japanese Trapdoor Snails. Delivery was a day late and, when I opened the package, there were only six snails, five of which were tiny. I contacted LilyBlooms' customer service and was informed that a new employee had made a mistake and that they would be sending me replacements. They were as good as their word. I received 11 nice size snails in good condition the following week, at no additional charge. The mistake was unfortunate, but LilyBlooms' customer service is exceptional and I will order from them again. Thanks very much!

    They had babies

Posted by Valerie M Bury on Jun 3rd 2021

When they arrived I put them in a bowl first to see if there would be movement in 24 hours....only to discover they had babies. Put them in my koi tank outside & I watch them eating the algae.
