Product Overview

Trapdoor Pond Snails (Viviparus malleatus)

Trapdoor Snails are the preferred snail species for pond owners. Trapdoor Snails will survive in northern climates, will not eat live healthy plant tissue, and will not climb out of the water. Pond snails are helpful in keeping algae under control in your pond as they groom your plant containers, rocks, liner sides and plants. Trapdoor snails will consume excess fish food, fish waste and decaying leaves from the bottom of the pond, and therefore help to detoxify waste products. Trapdoor Snails are live-bearing (viviparous) -- they don't have as many offspring as most snails, and do not bear young as often, so are unlikely to overpopulate the pond, as is common with egg-laying snails. To have a positive effect on algae growth, a minimum of 10 snails per 50 square feet of pond surface is necessary. Large natural ponds would require at least 200 snails per acre to be effective. It also is important to have pond plants filter the pond and providing some shade, and to not overfeed fish, as the pond's ecosystem needs to be fairly balanced for the snails to make a significant difference.

Arrived well packaged and in good condition. Assume they are okay since they are not where I placed them in the pond.

    Good Pond cleaner

Ordered 100 and they arrived well packaged. Some of them didn't move for a few days so I thought they were dead but they were not! The seller told me to wait up to 2 weeks . Voila, they just took longer to feel safe to move around. :-) They are doing their job and my pond looks better!

Very happy with these snails. They came well packed and all of them, even the extra ones survived shipping despite being lost by the carrier for a few extra days. They acclimated quickly and are doing a stellar job cleaning.
